Meat PLUS

(Prime Lamb Ultimate Solution)

The “Meat PLUS” breed of sheep was the brainchild of Tony Rutter and the team at Tattykeel. It was designed to be run as a self-replacing flock (so as to remove the need to buy in expensive replacement ewes), have sensible lambing percentages (140% – 160%), tick the box for growth, carcass shape, evenness and good quality skins.

To achieve the desired outcomes, the following breeds were selected;

Poll Dorset

Tattykeel Poll Dorset’s renowned for their growth rates, muscle pattern and doing ability. Poll Dorset’s are the fastest growing and most acceptable lamb on the market, and have passed these attributes on to the Meat PLUS.

Texel

Texel ewes with Tattykeel bloodlines were selected for their exceptional length, strong black feet and docile temperament. Their carcass shape was also needed to compensate for a lack of shape in the East Friesian.

East Friesian

Tattykeel East Friesians were selected for their fertility and milk with particular attention to their shape and compact udders.

Using these selected animals to get the desired traits was not easy but the team stuck to their proven methods of stabilisation removing unwanted traits and expanding the desirable ones. Stabilising this composite was fast tracked with the use of Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer to get the breed type required. This is of the utmost importance as a breed will not be successful in the long term if it has too much variation.

Scanning technology for eye muscle area and consistent fat cover has figured largely in the development of the Meat PLUS, as has the all-important feedback from the retail end of the industry to make sure the product was suitable to the trade.

The exact mix of these breeds in the Meat PLUS will remain with the developer’s secret (the secret herbs and spices).
